Exhibition: Conklin, Oh, Berger

A piece that Andy just finished,

It gets me thinking of  Giorgione, Titian,

and, of course, Gauguin

The guest room - in what must be the attic 

of a house owned by an artist.

Here’s the problem I have with Andy’s painting:

The delicious verisimilitude of the distinct objects

makes me long for a more unifying power in the overall space. 

The whole seems like nothing more than opportunity for its parts to be savored.

Yet  certainly there is delight in the surfaces he renders

- just as in the exhibit of historic Japanese painting

that came to the Art Institute a few years ago.

Stuart Fullerton’s Portrait Class

Hah!  The student has captured the teacher in his day-job identity as a G-man (Federal prosecutor)

But he also honors his teacher by demonstrating his peculiar aesthetic.

Well - maybe not so peculiar in the French Academy of the 19th Century - but quite peculiar today. He’s not even a sentimental Impressionist like Richard Schmid and his followers.

He goes all the way back to when art was supposed to present probity and  moral gravitas.

It’s as if Manet, Picasso, Dekooning, and Warhol never existed.

It could have hung in a Palette and Chisel show  a hundred years ago

(Back on our glory days)

Stuart and his class is a Palette and Chisel success story.

Anchored in the past and as fresh as today. 

It’s not surprising that he had attracted such able students.
