Exhibit Leonid Osseny

I doubt whether Russian academies are still turning out artists with skill sets like Leonid's.

He combines Classical figure drawing with Cubist painting and Futurist design.

This dreary cityscape is my favorite.

I also like his Expressionist portraits

The Fab Four:   you don't know how lucky you are, boy, back in the US, back in the US, back in the USSR!

Horrible and beautiful at the same time.

That's Expressionism.

A nice presentation of Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself"

Summer Suite 2016

 Bodo Stolczenberger

My favorite Bodo painting - ever

Maro Bizarro

With it's non-stop model workshops, the Pallete and Chisel does not attract many photo-centric painters.  But Ms. Bizarro also happens to work here as a model.

This is a haunting image, isn't it? As Susan Sontag famously said "All photographs are memento mori"
And the same might be said for photo based painting.

Lenin Del Sol

A dramatic use of shadow - but it doesn't really help the form across Ann's back.

A fine portrait of Melissa as a crouching tiger.

This is a portrait of Maro, the artist/model whose work was also in this show.

Mary Klug

Another episode in Mary's world -- yet again proving the normal is far more strange than the fantastic.

Memorial Day 2016

Back when Stuart and I began this blog, I used to  post  pictures of whatever drawings caught my eye at the drawing marathons.

So when Del Hall volunteered to do the shooting -- that's what I asked him to do.

As it has turned out, Del prefers to document people rather than what they've been drawing.

Which is not such a bad idea, after all.

Just Google "maquoketa iowa artist" for more information about this occasional visitor to the marathons.

With the good attendance we've been having ever since Bill began pre-registration, we've always got three studios going throughout the day -- including the coach house for  doing quick sketch sculpture.
(though the sculptor, in this case, was not quite quick enough)
