After reading his scathing criticism of the dreaded Armory Show -- I'm guessing that it was Teddy Roosevelt.

OK -- next guess -- William Howard Taft.

What other Presidential home was turned into a small, but world-class art museum ? (The Taft Museum in Cincinnati is a treasure for anyone who likes Turner, Constable, Corot, Goya, Daubigny -- but especially Turner)

On the other hand, though --- there's no Americans there except Sargent and Duveneck.

June 2, 1953: "A letter was mailed to Washington, D.C., with certificate making U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower an honorary member of the Palette & Chisel Academy." Eisenhower, supreme allied commander of the Second World War and two-term president, was also known as an amateur painter: http://www.eisenhower.archives.gov/art.htm
