The Way It Was
There used to be an annual show at the Art Institute of work "by artists of Chicago and vicinity." Here's one of the posters from those days, from 1940.

The Vicinity Show was still running when I came to town (1976) -- indeed, it had another 10 years to go.
There must have been some explanations given as to why that century-old tradition was discontinued - and I'd love to read them -- and dispute with them ! - because as bad as those shows might have been (and I confess -- most of it bored me) -- it was still better than nothing -- which is what we have today.
I'm guessing that the problem is not the decline of local talent -- but the decline of taste among the curators attached to local institutions.
