Something about these small focused poems, er, still life paintings made me start to think their essence is so bound up in the props and "authorial" point of view, the genre suddenly and freshly seems very theatrical to me.

For example, think about Zurbaran's still life work. Then think about Carvaggio's. Fruit and vegetables the actors, but the former sets for a play by Beckett or someone even more sere, the latter sets a play that, due to my inadequate theatre-mind only conjures up Marat/Sade -- but you get the idea.

And then that leads to another question -- what does the painter add that a photographer cannot, if the heart of the genre is propping? (Just wondering, I really have no useful thoughts on that one yet.)

Hhhm. Maybe I'll try writing a poem still life and see what happens with that.

Chris, as always, thanks for keeping me inspired and thinking!

Thankyou, Lori, for such a long and thoughtful comment.

(and I like the idea of comparing the P&C artists with Zurbaran and Caravaggio!)

What can a painter add that a photographer cannot ?

I'm so glad you asked that question!

(because I've been working on a post about my favorite photographs -- YOUR photographs !)
