Henry George Brandt
Henry George Brandt,
born in Germany in 1862,
ended up in Chicago,
where at the age of 45,
he decided to study art
at the Art Institute.
As you see above,
he eventually had a good career
as a magazine illustrator
(and had an exhibit at the P&C)
but before that,
he continued the project begun
by some selected, fellow students
in the mural class
to decorate Lane Tech High School.
His theme was
the celebration of Native American life
(from a rather Romantic point of view)
Many of these murals are
currently on display
in a special exhibit
at the Chicago Cultural Center
rather charming,

Yes these were fabulous. I went into the cultural hall to keep warm and stumbled upon these murals. I found them absolutely mesmerizing, what an incredible style and fine hand of an artist who stylized smoke I followed off the canvas! My favorite was of course the enchanting dance. My frustration was that I could not even photograph them even without a flash...sigh...
Fellow artist
I discovered H. George Brandt, quit by accident, looking at old House and Garden Magazines. I eventually checked out all the magazines during the 20's and then began research. I enjoy Mr. Brandt's style so much I have copied some of his works in colored pencil. Having showed some of these works, I have proudly given the honor back to Mr. Brandt. I really enjoy his work.
We have two wonderful works by Brandt at the Schuetzen Park Historic Site in Davenport, IOWA. He was married to the daughter (Else Lorenzen) of one of the Park's founders, Jens Lorenzen. One of the paintings in our collection if of Jens Lorenzen, the other is a rustice\ woodland scene.
